Description
Paraphilia is a sexual disorder wherein the person is generally able to become sexually aroused only in the presence of persons or objects that are inappropriate for the circumstances. Further, the fantasies, urges, and behaviors that accompany paraphilia usually cause the individual much emotional pain, distress, and/or impaired functioning.
A few of the more common examples of paraphilia are voyeurism, exhibitionism, sexual sadism, sexual masochism, and various fetishes involving inanimate objects. One of the least socially acceptable types of paraphilia is pedophilia, wherein an adult is sexually attracted to young children.
Treatment
Treatment includes pharmacotherapy (a hormonal drug) and psychotherapy. Depending on the severity of the disorder, it may be necessary for the person to be treated in a specialized treatment center.
