Nutri/System, as a weight loss program, has the advantage of pre-packaged meals that are controlled for calories, sodium, fats, and trans-fats. The company was started in 1971 by a grocer’s son named Harold Katz, who had the ingenious idea of combining behavioral counseling, medical supervision, and low-calorie meals into one program. In addition, Katz decided to house the program in spaces that resembled doctors’ offices. The Nutri/System program achieved much success, and, today, after some litigation problems and changes in leadership and ownership, is still one of the most popular diet programs in the nation. However, a decision was made to redirect the focus of the company to e-commerce; that is, the program is currently administered over the Internet. There are now diet plans designed specifically for men, women, diabetics, and vegetarians. The pre-packaged meals are delivered to the dieter’s home and need only minor supplementation with fresh food items from the local grocery.
