Neurosis

Neurosis is a term that was formerly used to refer to a non-psychotic psychological disorder that was thought to stem from an unconscious conflict, could become seriously disabling if not treated, but usually did not debilitate the person or represent a break from reality.

[Both the terms neurosis and psychosis are outdated and no longer used by clinicians. What was once called a psychosis is now known as a psychotic disorder.]
