Craving is a primary symptom of a substance abuse disorder. It is a strong, sometimes overpowering feeling, an urge that disguises itself as a need and can lead to drug or alcohol use whether the addicted person is active stage, in treatment, or in recovery. If the individual does not give in to the craving—or cannot use the drugs, she will remain fretful and cranky.
