Common Questions

  • Causes of Adult ADHD

    • There is no single known cause for ADHD. Research suggests a strong genetic component, meaning ADHD tends to run in families. Researchers are still examining environmental factors that might increase the likelihood of ADHD.
  • Shouldn’t I have grown out of ADHD as a child?

    • It is estimated that approximately ⅔ of children diagnosed continue to experience symptoms in adulthood. Although symptoms may change from childhood to adulthood, many individuals with ADHD experience symptoms throughout their lifetime.
  • How can an ADHD evaluation help college students?

    • A diagnosis can also be helpful in qualifying a student for extra support at school, including qualifying for testing accommodations (e.g. extended time).
  • If I’m not in school, how can an ADHD evaluation help me?

    • Diagnostic clarity can provide valuable information to support management and treatment of symptoms.
  • How is ADHD treated in adults?

    • ADHD in adults is often treated with a combination of medication and cognitive behavioral therapy.
  • How much does an ADHD evaluation cost? Is it covered by insurance?

    • New York Behavioral Health offers in-person evaluations starting at $4,500. In addition, comprehensive virtual evaluations are offered starting at $900. During your free 15 minute consultation, our testing consultant will answer any questions you have about the price and testing options. We are an Out-Of- Network provider, meaning we do not accept insurance or work directly with insurance companies.
  • How long does an ADHD evaluation take?

    • An in-person evaluation for ADHD will take place across 2-3 in-person testing sessions. Each session is up to 6 hours long and will be tailored to the needs of the client and their level of sustained attention. In addition, a 60 minute virtual intake session will take place prior to the evaluation sessions and a 60 minute follow-up virtual session will be provided when the report is complete.
    • For virtual comprehensive evaluations, the evaluation will take place across two 45 minute sessions with the client. The evaluator will also contact any collaterals (e.g. doctors, therapists, family members) with the client’s consent, in order to gather information to confirm diagnosis.
