Common Questions

  • When should children be tested for ADHD?

    • Children as young as age 4 can be diagnosed with ADHD. You should consider having your child evaluated for ADHD if your child’s inattention, impulsivity, or hyperactivity is significantly impacting their ability to function in school, at home, or across multiple settings.
  • What causes ADHD?

    • There is no single known cause for ADHD. Research suggests a strong genetic component, meaning ADHD tends to run in families. Researchers are still examining environmental factors that might increase the likelihood of ADHD.
  • What kind of treatment is helpful if my child is diagnosed with ADHD?

    • Research suggests that a combination of behavioral therapy and medication is the most effective treatment for ADHD. For moderate to severe ADHD, medication is often the first treatment. Behavior therapy can be helpful in teaching skills that are more difficult for those with ADHD. Treatment can also include parent training and education.
  • Is there a cure for ADHD?

    • There is no cure for ADHD. It is estimated that approximately ⅓ of children diagnosed with ADHD no longer meet diagnostic criteria in adulthood. That means that approximately ⅔ of children diagnosed continue to experience symptoms in adulthood.
  • How much does an ADHD evaluation cost? Is it covered by insurance?

    • New York Behavioral Health offers in-person evaluations starting at $4,500. During your free 15 minute consultation, our testing consultant will answer any questions you have about the price and testing. We are an Out-Of- Network provider, meaning we do not accept insurance or work directly with insurance companies. If a client requests, we can provide a statement of services for a client to submit to their insurance company for possible reimbursement.
  • How long does an ADHD evaluation take?

    • An evaluation for ADHD will take place across 2-3 in-person testing sessions. Each session may vary in length based on the child’s needs and level of sustained attention and breaks needed. Most sessions will be approximately 6 hours or less. In addition, a 60 minute virtual intake session will take place prior to the evaluation sessions and a 60 minute follow-up virtual session will be provided when the report is complete.
